Life is what you make it. It's about the experiences you've had and what brought you there. That's what making memories is all about. Being a leader begins with taking charge of your own life. Throughout the years, I've learned that you can't take one second for granted. To take charge, you must live in the moment. As a leader at Ripon High School, I wish to motivate the student body to get involved with school activities so that they can make as many memories as possible. In this class, we have a large influence on what shapes our high school. I will influence the student body to reflect on their high school careers with dignity, knowing that they made the most of it. I am so honored and excited to be a part of such a powerful program.
As an athletics commissioner, my job is to inform our school of upcoming sporting events. I want our athletes to feel as though they have the support of their school. I will make sure that athletes are highlighted for their individual accomplishments, whether it’s personal improvements or outstanding performances. I hope to take stats of games for the football team and use my work to better highlight the program. I would also like to bring awareness to the conditions of the softball and baseball fields. There is a lot of money being put into the football program. Meanwhile, other sports programs are being neglected. The hitting cage for the softball team is in bad condition. Also, the dugouts are extremely small and can barely fit a whole team. I want all of the sports programs to be equal in quality.
My goal for this year is to make memories, both big and small. I plan to celebrate many accomplishments this year, such as increasing school spirit, increasing student involvement, and more. As a class, we must always remember to live in the moment. That way, we will make strong memories that will last forever and our legacies at Ripon High will always be remembered.

Quotes
"You'll have bad times, but it'll always wake you up to the good stuff you weren't paying attention to."
- Sean Maguire, Good Will Hunting
Robin Williams is one of my favorite actors. He played the role of Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting. Making memories is my main theme for this school year. We all struggle. It is how we face these struggles that will define us. I need to constantly remind myself to live in the moment. I focus on my future so much that I forget to pay attention to the good in my life right now. If I miss these moments, then I will have no memories to look back to.
"It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light."
- Aristotle
In 2017, 7% of high school students attempted suicide. Many teenagers wrestle with their own minds because of a mental illness. COVID-19 dramatically increased the number of depressed individuals. Some unfortunate people were at their darkest hour. It is during these times that we must focus on our light. Everyone has their own practice for finding peace. In my dark moments, I find comfort in listening to music alone or sharing my feelings with loved ones. It is imperative that we find light in the never-ending shade that we live in.
"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."
- Eleanor Roosevelt
Dreams are what inspire me to live out my purpose. As I continue to take steps into my future, God reveals his plan for me. As a believer, my number one purpose is to be a disciple of the truth. This means that I will spread the Gospel to others throughout my whole life. My dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and starting a family of my own are paths that God has set me on. He is the true bearer of my future and my dreams are what motivate me to accomplish it.
Reflection Quote
"Don't choose the one who is beautiful to the world. But rather, choose the one who makes your world beautiful."
- Harry Styles
I have grown so much throughout my sophomore year. I have learned how to focus on the people I love and not the people that bring me down. It takes strength to realize this and put it to practice. That is why this quote reflects me as a leader. Leaders need to be willing to make adjustments throughout life that will allow them to grow in a positive light. Being intentional with the people I love, including my leadership family, is an important quality as a leader in this program. Practicing this can impact the future students of this program because it will show them what it looks like to form genuine connections with the people around them. This quote showed me how much a simple statement can change your perspective. I learned that I need to let go of the fake people in my life and focus on the people I love.
Short Term Goals
Pass my AP World History exam.
This AP course is one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. I work hard and study every night. I will continue to pay attention in class and take plenty of notes. I will strategize my study time similar to how I did last year with AP Human Geography to ensure that I have the best chances of passing the exam.
Earn a 4.35 GPA this year.
I am taking three honors classes and an AP course. These four classes require a lot of devotion and focus. I have always received straight A's and this will be the most difficult year to keep my streak. I will pay close attention and give my best work in every class, especially Medical Terminology because it involves my future career.
Long Term Goals
Get accepted into Harvard University.
Harvard is the number one university in the world. They have the best medical program as well. It has been my dream to attend an Ivy League school since I was in eighth grade. I will continue to keep my grades up and work hard to get into medical school. Harvard will be my aid in my future career as a neurosurgeon.
Graduate at the top of my class.
There are many smart individuals who are working hard to achieve this position in my sophomore class. That only means that I need to work twice as hard to make sure that I graduate as valedictorian. To get accepted into a top university, I need to be on top of my grades. My academic successes along with other important stand-out opportunities will be the doorway to college.
Life Long Goals
Be one of the top neurosurgeons in the country.
As a competitor, I strive to be the best. Saving lives is a noble honor that I can't wait to be included in. When researching about different medical careers, neurosurgery has always fascinated me the most. Studying the brain and nervous system never fails to enthrall my interests. Being in the operating room is a privilege that I strive to achieve. I want to be a top neurosurgeon because it is my wish to be able to provide a sustainable life for my family one day.
Get married and start a family.
Since I started high school, I have had long thoughts about my future. Most of the time, I think about my career. But recently, I have begun to think about my future as a wife and a mother. I don't think about romantic relationships often because it isn't a priority in my life right now. But one day, I want marry my soulmate and start a family.
Reflection of Goals
Pass my AP World History exam.
I have worked extremely hard to maintain an A in this class throughout the school year. I spend hours studying for this class every week. I have turned in every homework assignment and I have put in 100% effort for every project. I started studying a month before the exam and I am a little nervous to see how it all pans out. I am confident in the fact that I have tried my best to pass this exam, and that is all I can ask of myself.
Earn a 4.35 GPA this year.
I have exceeded this goal. Last semester, I earned a 4.43 GPA. I know that I will continue to have straight A's and maintain this GPA. I have pushed myself to the max to make sure that I follow through with my goal.
Get accepted into Harvard University.
I have made many strides to accomplish this goal. I have maintained a high GPA that will potentially make me a qualified student for their university. I am also in the process of planning a service-based project for the local elementary schools. I have always been passionate about medicine and I want to share my knowledge with local elementary students to potentially spark an interest in them for the medical field.
Graduate at the top of my class.
I have continued to push myself every day to accomplish this goal. I had a meeting with my college counselor to solidify a plan for the remainder of my high school career. I plan to continue to try my best in all of my classes. I am excited to see what the future has in store for me.
Be one of the top neurosurgeons in the country.
I have my mock interview coming up that will help to further educate me in this field of study. I am also participating in the National Congress of Future Physicians. This program helps students who have an interest in the medical field to experience different pathways and find what is the best fit for them. I am still in love with neurosurgery and I can not wait to go to medical school.
Get married and start a family.
This is still one of the most important goals I have for myself, but unlike my other goals, I am not actively working to get married or have a family. I still have my whole life ahead of me to learn what love looks like and find someone that I want to spend the rest of my life with. I do not want to rush this process, especially by starting in high school. I want to wait until I am ready for a relationship and until I have the time to commit to someone.

Role Model
Paul Kalanithi made his first impact on my life when I was in eighth grade. He was an instructor in Stanford's Department of Neurosurgery and a fellow at the Stanford Neurosciences Institute. He is the reason I want to become a neurosurgeon. His autobiography, When Breath Becomes Air, changed my life forever. Kalanithi's book is about his life as a neurosurgeon and his fight against lung cancer. His story was not only inspiring, but it also taught me so much about the medical field that I did not know before reading. I admire Kalanithi because he has an honorable character. His story was the gift I didn't know I needed. He gave me a dream worth living for. He also taught me to live life with a purpose. Kalanithi died at age thirty-seven. Some may think that thirty-seven is not a long time to live, but Kalanithi showed the world how to live a fulfilled life.

Inner Animal
The animal that best represents me is a penguin. Penguins have a unique personality that perfectly reflects mine. They are outgoing but shy and aggressive yet gentle. I love spending time with my friends and family, but I can be shy when I am in a large crowd. I also have a sense of empathy. I know when to comfort my loved ones and be gentle, but I will not hesitate to defend them if needed. Penguins are also modestly intelligent like me. They live in the frozen weather of Antarctica. I too love the extreme cold and I thrive in the snow. Most importantly, penguins always put family first. I am exceedingly loyal to my loved ones. Penguins also live in a black and white world, and they mate for life. This is significant because it relates to my future. One of my lifelong goals is to marry my soulmate and start a family. I want to find my perfect match and live with them forever, just like penguins.

The Best Things About Me
The Impact of Sound and Words
Buy Dirt
Jordan Davis and Luke Bryan
A few days before he turned 80
He was sittin' out back in a rocker He said, "What you been up to lately?" I told him, "Chasing a dollar" And in between sips of coffee He poured this wisdom out Said, "If you want my two cents on making a dollar count Buy dirt Find the one you can't live without Get a ring, let your knee hit the ground Do what you love but call it work And throw a little money in the plate at church Send your prayers up and your roots down deep Add a few limbs to your family tree And watch their pencil marks And the grass in the yard all grow up" 'Cause the truth about it is It all goes by real quick You can't buy happiness But you can buy dirt Before you get caught on that ladder Let me tell you what it's all about Find you a few things that matter That you can put a fence around And then he laid it out Buy dirt Find the one you can't live without Get a ring, let your knee hit the ground Do what you love but call it work And throw a little money in the plate at church Send your prayers up and your roots down deep And add a few limbs to your family tree And watch their pencil marks And the grass in the yard all grow up 'Cause the truth about it is It all goes by real quick You can't buy happiness But you can buy dirt You can buy dirt And thank the good Lord for it 'Cause He ain't makin' any more of it So buy dirt Find the one you can't live without Get a ring, let your knee hit the ground Do what you love but call it work And throw a little money in the plate at church Send your prayers up and your roots down deep Add a few limbs to your family tree And watch their pencil marks And the grass in the yard all grow up 'Cause the truth about it is It all goes by real quick You can't buy happiness But you can buy dirt |
The music that people listen to shows their character and expression. "Buy Dirt" is one of my favorite songs because it relates to me. The values of finding the one you love and going to church are significant things that I desire. This song reflects some of the goals I have for myself in the future, such as getting married, having kids, attending church, and living in a nice house with my family. One line in the song states, "It all goes by real quick." My mom reminds me every day that my brother and I grow up quickly. Sometimes I can not believe that I am already fifteen. I often ask myself, "Where did the time go?" I know that it will go by even faster as I get older. I always anticipate the future, but I think I need to focus more on the present so that I can enjoy my childhood while it lasts.

What I Like Best About Being a Member of Leadership
My favorite part of leadership is not only making an impact on my high school experience but making an impact on the experience of my classmates. Making memories is one of the most important parts of life, and high school occupies four years of it. I love being a part of Homecoming and Winterfest because I will always remember the moments I shared with my friends. Setting up for these events takes a lot of time and energy, but it is always worth it when you see the student body enjoying the wonderful results of your hard work. Another part of leadership that I appreciate is planning powder puff with Kade. Planning a successful event is stressful, but the little things along the way are what make it so fun. Kade always found a way to make us laugh when we were taking inventory on the old football jerseys that smelt awful. Practices were not always fun because a lot of people did not put in any effort, but the game was a huge success. Focusing on the positive is what makes life special, which is why I love leadership so much. I love the positivity that we spread around campus because it helps students enjoy their high school experience.
A Reflection of a Peer in Leadership
Emma Phelps
Emma Phelps is my mentor in leadership, so it felt right to give her the recognition she deserves. Emma goes above and beyond in everything that she does for this school. She makes sure that decorations are perfect for dances and other events. She also shows up spirited to every football, volleyball, and basketball game. Emma comes up with great ideas for themed sporting events. She also uses her creativity to help others. When Emma has free time in class, she uses it to help the underclassmen. I always ask Emma for help when I need something because I know that she is reliable and that she is always willing to be there for me. She always drives me to football games or volleyball games when I don't have a ride and we always have the best time. Emma has become an older sister to me and I don’t know what I would do without her.

What I Love to Do
I love sports. I have been playing softball for nine years. Playing on a team with my friends has been one of the best experiences. I have learned so many life lessons throughout the years, such as patience and hard work. Everyone has their ups and downs. Early in my career, it was difficult for me to realize that I am not always going to be perfect. I am going to strike out sometimes. I am going to make errors. Not only is this a part of softball, but it is a part of life. I have worked hard to get where I am now.
Another hobby of mine is raising animals for FFA. My parents wanted me to start small, so I raised pigs for three years. I started raising cattle about a year and a half ago. My operation has grown from two animals to five throughout that time. I have two cows, two heifer calves, and a beef steer that I will sell this summer. Being around my cattle brings me so much joy. They will always be a valuable part of my life.

Letter to Parents
Dear Mom and Dad,
Where did the time go? Sixteen years old! It feels like I was six yesterday. You have loved me and supported me since the day I was born. I will never be able to repay you for all of the sacrifices you have made to give me the best life you could. You have been to every sporting event, every educational contest, and every other step of the way. Sometimes I ask myself, where would I be without you? The answer is nowhere. You have shaped me into the young woman I am today, and I am proud to call you my parents. Thank you for everything. I will always love you.
Your favorite and only daughter,
Ava

General Advice
Dear Nathan,
I have high hopes for you. I have watched you grow as a leader this year and I know that you will continue to improve next year. Never be afraid to ask questions. If you ever need help with something, that is what I am here for. Athletics Commissioner looks like the easiest job in this program, but do not be fooled. You will have to work hard to host successful events such as powder puff and dodge ball, but you will not be alone. We will work together every step of the way. I know that with your help, we will be able to improve our events next year. We will be more organized, efficient, and successful overall. You will do amazing things next year in this position.
Sincerely,
Ava Brocchini

The Professional
Throughout this year, the leadership program has taught me many aspects of professional learning. One skill that I have learned in this program is how to create a cover letter and resume. With this knowledge, I am more prepared to apply for a job in the future. I am now confident that I can professionally present myself to employers.
Another valuable professional skill I have learned is how to design a portfolio. I learned how to create this website and illustrate how the leadership program has helped me mature as a professional leader. Having a portfolio is significant because it can show future employers who I truly am. It is also beneficial because it can set me apart from other employees.

Change
I have experienced both positive moments and times of frustration throughout the school year. Homecoming and powderpuff were my favorite events of the year, but it was not easy to plan them. I was extremely frustrated while I was coordinating powderpuff practices and meetings. To play in the powderpuff game, students must attend practices and mandatory meetings. It was disappointing to see so many people try and take advantage of the system. Kade and I had to listen to hundreds of excuses, but we kept our composure for each one.
I recommend that the future athletics commissioners set clear boundaries from the beginning. I think that this will help prevent uncommitted students from participating in powderpuff. I would also recommend planning ahead. Preparation is key when it comes to coordinating an athletic event like powderpuff.
One change I would suggest in the future is to have more collaborative work and team bonding activities throughout the school year. I think that we have had only one real team bonding experience, and that was when we sold tickets for the fundraiser. I think it’s super important to have activities like this because we can grow stronger as a class. If we get to know each other better, we can trust each other more when we have to plan events.

The Ideal Leader
An ideal leader is someone who is compassionate. I do not think that you can properly lead someone without having sympathy for them. I also think that an ideal leader needs to remember their purpose. How can someone lead if they do not have a purpose? Leaders are held to high standards. You have to remember your purpose to meet those expectations.
